It really doesn’t come as much of a surprise then, in this, the summer of 20-fucking-23, that Will yet again finds himself playing the role of an unwitting fool in Mike Wheeler’s games.Īn offer to share the very last marshmallow skewer, a tentative truce for the night that had resulted in Will returning the olive branch with one of his own, and an unusually kind word given underneath the soft glow of porch lights, leaving Will with a curiosity and a hope that maybe, this summer could be different.Īnd then - a concert, not even a week later, at least somewhat soured by incessant bickering at ungodly hours of the night while trapped in the middle of a Chicago parking lot with no way out but to go inch slowly, slowly, slowly through hundreds of cars’ worth of traffic.Īfter that - a canoe ride and a surprising trip down memory lane that had left Will with a stomach full of butterflies and with an inexplicably dry mouth and with a mind thinking all the way back to one summer ago, then two summers ago, and then three, four, five summers ago, before finally landing where he somehow always does: six summers ago.Ī tipped canoe. That’s probably a good thing, Will thinks, considering he is inexplicably guilty of being fooled more times than he can count over these past several years. The saying does not lend its wisdom to a third, fourth, fifth time, and it certainly doesn’t extend to a tenth, an eleventh, or a twelfth time. It’s just one of those sayings that seems to be everywhere, like an inescapable omen from a universe that is constantly trying to warn Will before his bad ideas reap equally bad, if not worse, consequences.įool me once, that saying goes, shame on you.įool me twice, shame on me, is how it ends. ![]() From movies, TV shows, songs and from friends, teachers, and family members too.
